TATTOO AFTERCARE

1. Initial Care (First 24-48 Hours)

  • Leave the bandage on: Your tattoo will be covered with a sterile bandage or plastic wrap to protect it from bacteria and dirt. Leave this on for at least 2-4 hours (or as instructed by your artist). If you experience discomfort or your bandage becomes wet, remove it sooner.

  • Gently wash your tattoo: After removing the bandage, wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and unscented antibacterial soap. Avoid using a washcloth or sponge, and use your clean hands to gently wash off any excess ink, blood, or plasma.

  • Pat dry: Use a clean, soft towel or paper towel to gently pat your tattoo dry. Do not rub it.

2. Moisturizing (After Initial Wash)

  • Apply a thin layer of ointment or healing cream: Once your tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free healing ointment (such as A+D ointment, Aquaphor, or a tattoo-specific aftercare product). Avoid over-applying, as this can cause the tattoo to suffocate and prolong the healing process.

  • Switch to lotion: After the first few days, you can switch to a fragrance-free lotion that’s gentle and hydrating. Apply it lightly to keep your tattoo moisturized without over-saturating it.

3. During the Healing Process (First 2-3 Weeks)

  • Avoid direct sunlight: Do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight or tanning beds for at least 2-3 weeks. UV rays can cause fading and irritation to the healing skin.

  • No soaking: Avoid submerging your tattoo in water for 3-4 weeks. This includes swimming pools, hot tubs, baths, and oceans. Showers are fine, but keep the tattoo area out of direct water stream for prolonged periods.

  • Do not scratch or pick: Your tattoo may begin to scab or peel after a few days. It’s essential to not scratch, pick, or peel the tattoo, as this can cause scarring or disrupt the design. Let the skin heal naturally.

  • Wear loose clothing: Try to wear loose, comfortable clothing over your tattoo to avoid friction that could irritate or damage the tattooed area.

4. Daily Care (2-4 Weeks After Tattoo)

  • Keep it clean: Continue to wash your tattoo gently once or twice a day using unscented soap and lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean towel and reapply a thin layer of ointment or lotion.

  • Moisturize regularly: Keep your tattoo hydrated by applying a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion as needed. The tattooed area should remain soft and not feel tight or dry.

  • Monitor for any issues: While tattoos typically heal without issues, keep an eye out for any signs of infection, including increased redness, swelling, excessive pain, or pus. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional immediately.

5. Things to Avoid During Healing

  • Sun Exposure: Avoid direct sunlight on your tattoo, as UV rays can cause fading, scarring, and irritation. If you must go outside, make sure to protect your tattoo with SPF 30+ sunscreen once it’s fully healed.

  • Excessive Moisture: Do not soak your tattoo in water for long periods. Avoid baths, pools, or hot tubs until your tattoo has fully healed.

  • Tight Clothing: Avoid wearing tight clothing over your tattoo, as this can rub against the area and cause irritation.

  • Perfumed Products: Stay away from scented soaps, lotions, or other products that could irritate the tattooed skin.

6. Healing Timeline

  • First 3 Days: Your tattoo will be red, swollen, and may ooze a small amount of ink and plasma. This is completely normal.

  • Week 1: As your tattoo heals, it will begin to scab and peel. The healing skin will feel tight and may itch. Do not scratch or pick at scabs, as this can damage the tattoo.

  • Week 2-3: The majority of the scabbing and peeling will be complete. Continue to moisturize and protect your tattoo from the sun.

  • Week 4 and Beyond: Your tattoo should be mostly healed, but continue to moisturize and protect it from sun exposure. It may take a few months for the deeper layers of skin to fully heal.

7. Long-Term Care

  • Protect from UV rays: After your tattoo has healed, make sure to protect it from UV rays by wearing sunscreen when you're out in the sun. Sunscreen helps prevent fading and keeps the colors vibrant.

  • Regular moisturizing: Keeping your tattoo moisturized helps maintain the color and detail. Use a gentle, fragrance-free lotion to keep the skin hydrated.

  • Touch-ups: Over time, tattoos may experience slight fading or areas that need touch-ups. If you feel the need for any enhancements, feel free to contact your artist for a touch-up session.

8. Signs of Infection

While rare, infections can occur if proper aftercare isn't followed. Keep an eye on the following signs:

  • Increased redness around the tattoo

  • Excessive swelling or pain

  • Pus or discharge coming from the tattoo

  • A fever or feeling unwell

If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical advice immediately.
